The Cyprus Department of Road Transport (ΤΟΜ) announced the activation of a dedicated helpline for issues related to the Takata airbag recall on 2nd of May, stressing that citizen safety is a top priority. However, despite the announcement, there have been growing complaints about the line’s unresponsiveness.
According to the statement, the helpline was established to assist the public in matters concerning the defective Takata airbags, which have been linked to serious safety risks. The department encouraged citizens who were unable to schedule recall appointments through authorised vehicle distributors to contact the helpline for guidance. The number provided is 22600500, operational Monday to Friday, from 08:00 to 15:00.
Helpline remains silent for days
Despite repeated attempts by the public- and even media outlets such as SigmaLive- to reach the helpline, calls have reportedly gone unanswered for three consecutive days. In a video published by SigmaLive, a recorded attempt to contact the helpline clearly demonstrated the lack of response.
The Takata airbag recall is part of a global safety campaign addressing faulty airbag inflators that could explode upon deployment, causing serious injury or death. Cyprus’ Transport Department committed to supporting citizens affected by the recall, but the unresponsive line has sparked frustration and concerns over vehicle safety.
Public demand for accountability
Social media platforms have seen a surge in complaints, with many car owners expressing their frustration over the inability to book recall appointments. Some are calling for greater accountability from the Department of Road Transport and clearer communication regarding the malfunctioning helpline.
Authorities have yet to release a statement addressing the issue, leaving many vehicle owners without a path forward in addressing the potentially life-threatening defect.
