A unique musical experience which blends Cypriot musical tradition with contemporary elements, celebrating the island’s cultural heritage while exploring its evolving artistic identity
The 30-member all-female Amalgamation Choir celebrates its 10th anniversary with a special performance of CLAY – ΠΗΛΟΣ on 17th May 2025 at ETHAL Theatre in Limassol.
The concert combines traditional music with contemporary elements, celebrating the cultural heritage of the island and the wider eastern Mediterranean. It engages with elements of Cypriot, Greek, Pontic, and Cretan traditional music, as well as with elements of the musical tradition of the Greek-speaking communities of southern Italy, while infusing these sounds with new, original compositions.
The performance highlights the voice of women as bearers of tradition and memory, merging past and present in a powerful exploration of Cypriot identity. The choir’s vocal prowess brings together folk melodies and modern arrangements, creating an immersive musical experience that reflects Cyprus’ timeless and vibrant culture.
Amalgamation Choir, known for its performances in cities such as Nicosia, Paphos, London, Stockholm, Lyon, Istanbul and Brest, now brings its dynamic sound to one of Limassol’s most known venues, ETHAL theatre.
The concert features an artistic collaboration with renowned Cypriot potter Socrates Petrides, who integrates traditional pottery elements within the performance, alongside composer Giorgos Kalogirou and arranger Ermis Michail.
CLAY – ΠΗΛΟΣ is more than a concert; it’s a multisensory journey that invites the audience to connect with music through symbolic objects like the traditional Cypriot kouza (a traditional Cypriot pot made with stoneware clay), engaging both through sound and visual culture.
