Visiting 7 “Epitaphios” in Nicosia on Good Friday

Date:

An old tradition about historic churches in Old Nicosia

As part of the activity “We Walk Together, We Stroll Together” (Perpatoume Mazi, Voltaroume Parea), organised by the group “55 Syn Plin Mazi”, this Good Friday, 18 April, we will honour a very old tradition by visiting the “Epitaphios” of seven well-known historic churches in Old Nicosia. This custom has long been observed by the faithful in the area:

  • Church of Panagia Faneromeni
  • Church of Saint Anthony
  • Cathedral of Apostle Barnabas
  • Church of Panagia Chrysaliniotissa
  • Church of Saint Kassianos
  • Church of Saint Savvas
  • Church of Archangel Michael Trypiotis
  • Church of Saint Eleftherios – Machairas Monastery Dependency

“This custom began many years ago when the faithful were curious to see how other parishes had decorated their Epitaphios. People started visiting various churches to admire the beautifully adorned bier of Christ. The number 3 symbolises the Holy Trinity, while the number 7 refers to the Seven Sacraments of Orthodoxy.”

We’ll walk at a relaxed pace, sharing stories about the Epitaphios, Easter traditions, the churches, neighbourhoods, and streets.

📍 Meeting point: “Yiayia Viktoria” Patisserie at the end of Ledra Street, at 2:30 p.m., where we’ll enjoy a coffee or tea before setting off.

📞 Reservation required: Call 99693777.
