Easter eggs colouring with thread: An eco-friendly twist to tradition

Date:

Egg dyeing is an integral part of Easter preparations. Traditionally, the colour red dominates, symbolising the blood of Christ’s sacrifice and the rebirth from the empty Tomb. In recent years, new techniques have enriched the custom beyond the classic method—such as dyeing eggs with threads.

As noted by Nektaria Kokkinaki, a certified olive oil taster and ambassador of the Mediterranean diet from the European network Mediterranean Diet Network (MD.net), in an interview with the Athens–Macedonian News Agency, “The thread-dyeing technique stands out for its simplicity, its ecological aspect, and the impressive aesthetic result.”

“Instead of classic dyes, colourful threads are tightly wrapped around the eggs before they go into the pot. During boiling, the pigments from the threads transfer onto the shell, creating unique and unpredictable patterns—like tiny works of art. All members of the family can take part and create their own special egg,” she adds.

According to tradition, Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday are the established days for egg dyeing, with the exception of Good Friday.

“The kitchen becomes a creative workshop, where imagination and thread colours combine to form unique Easter decorations,” Ms Kokkinaki concludes.

Materials

  • Eggs
  • Floss threads in various colours
  • Aluminium foil, cut into pieces
  • 3 tablespoons of vinegar

Instructions

• Place the eggs in a bowl with plenty of water, add vinegar, and let them sit for 5 minutes.
• While the eggs are still wet, wrap them with threads according to the shapes and patterns you want to create.
• Then wrap each egg tightly in a piece of aluminium foil and place them in a pot with enough water to cover.
• Boil on medium heat for at least 10 minutes.
• Once done, remove the eggs and let them cool completely.
• Unwrap the foil and remove the threads. Wipe the eggs with a dry cloth.
• To give them a glossy finish, rub a bit of olive oil onto the eggs using a piece of absorbent paper.
