ON THIS DAY: Buchenwald concentration camp is liberated (1945)

Date:

On this day in 1945, American soldiers of the 6th Armoured Division liberated the Buchenwald concentration camp near Weimar, Germany, revealing to the world the full extent of Nazi brutality and the horrors of the Holocaust.

Buchenwald was one of the largest and earliest concentration camps established by the Nazi regime, opening in July 1937. Unlike extermination camps such as Auschwitz or Treblinka, Buchenwald was not specifically designed for mass killings; however, tens of thousands of inmates died there due to starvation, disease, forced labour, medical experiments, and systematic executions.

By the time American forces arrived, approximately 21,000 prisoners remained in the camp. Many were severely malnourished and on the brink of death. The soldiers were met with scenes of unspeakable suffering—emaciated bodies, overcrowded barracks, and mass graves.

Remarkably, in the days leading up to the liberation, a group of prisoners had organised a resistance movement within the camp. As the SS guards began to flee in anticipation of the Allied advance, the prisoners seized control of parts of the camp and managed to hold out until the arrival of U.S. forces.

The liberation of Buchenwald became one of the first major revelations of the Holocaust to the Western world. Images and reports from the camp shocked the global public and were later used as crucial evidence during the Nuremberg Trials.

Among those imprisoned at Buchenwald were notable figures such as Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel and former French President François Mitterrand. Wiesel later wrote extensively about his experience, ensuring that the memory of what occurred would not be forgotten.

Today, Buchenwald stands as a memorial and museum, reminding future generations of the dangers of hatred, totalitarianism, and indifference.
