Thanasis’ family demands justice as report reveals 7 suspects

Date:

The lawyer representing the family of the late Thanasis Nicolaou, Nicos Clerides, appeared on Protoselido, discussing the family’s request for the return of his remains.

He initially stated that the Legal Service objects to handing over the hyoid bone and the accompanying slides. He emphasised that it was through these remains that it became evident Thanasis had been strangled. “It is the bone Mr Stavrianos failed to examine,” he said.

He added that Mr Stavrianos’ behaviour is unlawful. “He has no legal basis and is not entitled to claim he is an interested party.”

He explained that the family had submitted a legal request for the remains to be returned after examinations were completed. “There is no reason for the bones to remain in police custody while this grieving mother goes there daily to pray and hold memorial services.”

He described Mrs Andriana as a heroine. “She has been fighting for 20 years,” he said.

Mr Clerides stated that bones which are many years old can be kept in an ossuary. “The mother wants to store them in an ossuary.”

He stressed that a court cannot rely on speculation. “At this moment, no legal procedure is pending that would require re-examination of the bones.”

He further stated that Mr Stavrianos had the opportunity to examine the bones after the exhumation and during the inquest. “Why is he now making demands and causing the family distress?”

Additionally, he pointed out that his incompetence was so severe that Cyprus was condemned by the European Court of Human Rights.

When asked whether the family would take legal action against him, he responded, “The last step taken was the appointment of criminal investigators by the Council of Ministers. The report has been submitted and we have received it as well.”

He emphasised that leaked information suggests seven individuals are named in the report, with the investigators recommending criminal prosecutions. “These charges concern cover-ups and omissions,” he said.
