Only solution is the reunification of Cyprus, Greek FM says

Date:

Despite the fact that the position of the Turkish Cypriot side is not in line with the framework defined by the UN Security Council resolutions, it is extremely important to have a dialogue in order to build trust and the only solution is the reunification of Cyprus, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said immediately after the conclusion of the informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format that took place on March 17 and 18 in Geneva.

Gerapetritis stressed that following concerted efforts by the Greek and the Cypriot government, the UN Secretary General set out as a major priority during the last period the resumption of the informal discussions on the Cyprus problem. He said that the discussion that took place was based on the areas of confidence-building measures between the parties, in particular the issues of demining, environmental protection, youth, cemetery restoration and others.

“It was decided that a personal envoy on behalf of the UN Secretary General will be appointed for the next steps of the discussions. It is extremely important that the Cyprus issue is at the top of the UN agenda and there will be a continuation of the informal meetings, both bilaterally and with the participation of the five parties. We expect that at the end of July there will be a new five-party meeting.

“We understand that despite the fact that the position of the Turkish Cypriot side is not in line with the framework defined by the UN Security Council resolutions, it is extremely important to have a dialogue in order to build trust and the only solution is the reunification of the island,” the Greek Foreign Minister concluded.
