Plenary of informal meeting on Cyprus underway in Geneva

The Plenary of the informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format is underway in Geneva on Tuesday.

The Plenary, which began at 13:00 (Cyprus time), is expected to last approximately three hours.

According to the schedule, the heads of delegations – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, President Nikos Christodoulides, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey, George Gerapetritis and Hakan Fidan respectively, and the British Minister of State for Europe and North America, Stephen Doughty, would deliver their opening remarks, followed by a discussion.

President Christodoulides is accompanied to the Plenary by Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, the Negotiator of the Greek Cypriot side, Menelaos Menelaou, Attorney of the Republic Mary-Ann Stavrinides and Professor of Law, Achilles Emilianides.

In addition to Secretary-General António Guterres, the UN delegation includes Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo, Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, and Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva, Tatiana Valovaya.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced an informal meeting in a broader format, in Geneva, on March 17 and 18, to exchange views with the Cyprus President and the Turkish Cypriot leader on ways of achieving progress on the Cyprus issue, following their informal dinner on October 15, 2024, in New York. Representatives from Greece, Turkey and the UK are  also attending the meeting.
