The Government is making every possible effort through diplomatic channels and peaceful dialogue to achieve a just, functional and viable solution, which will be based on the United Nations Resolutions on Cyprus, the principles of international legitimacy and the European acquis, said on Sunday the Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou, in her memorial speech at the national memorial service of the fighter of the liberation struggle of the EOKA 1955-1959 Nitsa Hadjigeorgiou.
She added that in this context, the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides is going to Geneva, where the informal enlarged meeting on the Cyprus problem will take place, with a clear objective, to lift the deadlock in the talks and restart the process from where it was interrupted in 2017.
Bypassing Turkish intransigence, she noted, “we will do everything possible from our side to end the occupation and reunite our homeland, only in this way will we vindicate fighters like Nitsa Hadjigeorgiou, as well as every hero, who offered their own lives for a higher and holier cause, for the homeland.”
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results due to Turkish intransigence. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced an expanded meeting, in Geneva, on March 17 and 18, to exchange views with the Cyprus President and the Turkish Cypriot leader on ways of achieving progress on the Cyprus issue, following their informal dinner on October 15, 2024, in New York. Representatives from Greece, Turkey and the UK are also expected to attend the meeting.
