The final day for renewing vehicle licences for the year 2025 is Tuesday, 11 March at midnight, according to the Department of Road Transport (TOM) of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works. As of 6 March, a total of 627,024 vehicle licences had already been renewed.
In an official statement, it was clarified that vehicle licences can be renewed for a period of three, six, nine, or twelve months. Licences renewed after Tuesday will incur a penalty charge, which consists of a €10 fee plus an additional 10% of the licence cost corresponding to the outstanding amount for the current year.
Vehicle owners who renewed their licence for 2024 but do not intend to renew it for 2025 must submit a notification of immobilisation to the DRT. This can also be done online via the TOM website: Road Transport Department.
Additionally, it is noted that vehicles whose licence was not renewed in 2024 and were not declared as immobilised will be deleted from the TOM register if the outstanding fee for 2024 is not paid and the licence is not renewed for 2025. In cases where a vehicle has been scrapped, the owner must submit an application for deregistration (form TOM 98A) to the Department of Road Transport, accompanied by a Certificate of Destruction issued by licensed end-of-life vehicle treatment facilities. This ensures that the owner is exempt from paying road tax from the date of the vehicle’s destruction.
Lastly, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works clarifies that no renewal notices have been sent to vehicle owners. Owners must keep their contact details updated in the TOM register to ensure they receive relevant notifications and information.
