Massive fire destroys home in Engomi -residents evacuate safely

Date:

A fire broke out on the night of Tuesday (4/3) in a house in Engomi.

According to the Fire Service Spokesperson, Andreas Kettis, at 22:55, “six fully staffed fire engines responded, including an aerial platform vehicle, for a fire in a three-storey wooden house (basement, ground floor, first floor) in Engomi. The fire caused extensive damage to the first floor, while the ground floor also suffered severe damage due to the firefighting efforts.”

He noted that “due to the immense heat load that developed, a precautionary evacuation of the residents was carried out with the assistance of the Police to a nearby apartment building and house. The owner and his wife were inside the house at the time of the fire outbreak but managed to exit safely before the arrival of the Fire Service.”

Off-duty personnel were called in to cover the needs of the Nicosia stations.

The entire operation was reinforced by staffed fire engines from Larnaca and EMAK. The Nicosia District Fire Station Officer and the Director of Operations also responded to the incident to coordinate the operation.

At first glance, according to the Police, the fire appears to have started from a fireplace. The causes of the fire will be determined today in collaboration with the Police.
