Gerapetritis at the UN Security Council: Greece supports peace

Date:

Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis underlined the Security Council’s historic responsibility for maintaining international peace and security addressing the member states of the Security Council, which met on the situation in Ukraine immediately after the ratification of the UN Draft Resolution.

Recognizing the multiple global crises, Gerapetritis reiterated Greece’s firm commitment to international law and respect for the treaties that define international borders.

Gerapetritis stressed that Greece condemns any violation of international peace and security through military aggression, reaffirming its clear stance towards Ukraine since the beginning of the war. He called for an end to the suffering and praised every effort towards peace.

“We need peace. The war must stop. We all agree on this. And we commend all efforts in this direction,” he noted.

Greece expressed concern about the lack of reference to international law and the UN Charter in the Security Council Resolutions. Gerapetritis wondered why the amendments of the European members, which called for an immediate end to the conflict and a just, lasting and comprehensive peace, were not accepted and stressed that it is inconceivable to disagree on fundamental principles such as sovereign equality and territorial integrity of states.
