Senior UN official to continue talks on Cyprus issue in Athens

Date:

UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding, Rosemary DiCarlo, will visit Athens on Wednesday, where she is expected to continue her meetings on the Cyprus issue, as well as other key regional and global developments.

DiCarlo was in Cyprus on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, she met with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, discussing the future course of the Cyprus issue and the preparation of an informal meeting in a broader format. She also reaffirmed the UN’s continued commitment to peace on the island.

Additionally, during her stay in Cyprus, DiCarlo met with women’s groups, emphasizing that the participation of women in peace efforts is not just a matter of justice and equality but a smart peacebuilding strategy. She urged leaders to engage with them and other civil society representatives and to incorporate their perspectives.

Speaking to the press after her meeting with President Christodoulides, DiCarlo stated that they had a “very constructive conversation” where they “discussed preparations for the upcoming meeting in Geneva next month”, which, according to Greek diplomatic sources, is scheduled for March 17-18.

Rosemary DiCarlo will continue her meetings in Athens on Wednesday, while on Thursday, she will visit Ankara for discussions on the Cyprus issue, as well as other key regional and global developments.
