Cyprus Archaeological Museum construction progressing

Date:

Construction work for the Cyprus Archaeological Museum, which will be a modern museum with many applications, interactive displays and other tools, is progressing normally, Deputy Minister of Culture Vasiliki Kassianidou said on Thursday during a visit at the construction site.

In her remarks, the Deputy Minister said that cooperation and communication with the Public Works Department is ongoing, noting that the project is progressing normally. “It is a huge project and a complex architectural monument, which will be a landmark for our city and Cyprus,” she said.

Kassianidou said that while it was previously called the new Cyprus Museum, the name was changed to the Cyprus Archaeological Museum. “We took this decision because the name archaeological museum describes what this museum is, it is only for archaeology, it goes back to the end of the Roman period and so it describes it better,” she said.

Regarding the work that the Department of Antiquities does, Kassianidou said it has hired 10 conservators, who work full-time only for the conservation program of the objects that will be show-cased in the museum.

The Deputy Minister said that a museographic study has been done so that they know exactly where each object will go, and recently the tenders for all the technology that will be installed in the museum were advertised. She said it is a modern museum with many applications, interactive screens and other tools to help visitors have a better experience with the material.

In response to a question regarding the timelines for the delivery of the project, its cost and maintenance, the Deputy Minister said that since these are matters that concern the Department of Public Works and as the Minister of Transport was unable to be there during the visit, it is better not to go into technical issues.
