Blast at Barcelona port kills one person

Date:

One person was killed and another injured today following an explosion at the port of Barcelona, emergency services in Catalonia, northeastern Spain, have announced. The fire caused by the explosion has been extinguished.

In a post on the X platform, emergency services reported that the explosion occurred during maintenance work at the so-called “Energy Wharf,” where chemicals, natural gas, and refined petroleum products are loaded.

Barcelona City Hall stated that it received a notification of a “fire caused by an explosion in a transport tank” at 10:40 a.m., prompting the activation of the emergency plan for chemical hazards.

Companies in the area advised their personnel to limit movement as a precautionary measure, the statement added.
