Stewart briefs UNFICYP troop contributing countries and UNSC in New York ahead of mandate’s renewal
UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Colin Stewart, will brief the UNFICYP Troop Contributing Countries on Tuesday, in New York.
Moreover, on January 16 Stewart will brief the United Nations Security Council during closed consultations, ahead of the adoption by the Council of a resolution for the renewal of the peacekeeping force’s mandate.
The adoption of the resolution is scheduled to take place on January 31.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
