Wildfires across Attica have destroyed around 42% of the region’s forest areas over the past 10 years, according to data analysed by Meteo using information from the Copernicus Rapid Mapping Service and the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).
The figures show that since the beginning of the 2026 wildfire season, a further 4% of Attica’s forest areas have been affected by fires.
Before the start of the 2026 fire season, around 38% of the region’s forests had already been lost to fires over the previous nine years.
Fifteen major fires since 2017
Between 2017 and 3 August 2026, 15 major wildfires burned more than 800,000 acres in Attica.
The total area of the Attica Region, excluding Troizinia, the islands and the wider Athens basin, covers around 2.5 million acres.
Over the past decade, approximately 32% of this total area has been affected by forest fires.
Forest losses continue
The region’s forest areas cover around 1.23 million acres.
According to Meteo’s analysis, approximately 512,000 acres of forest have burned during the past 10 years, representing 42% of the total forest area.
The data highlight the significant impact of repeated wildfires on Attica’s natural environment and the scale of the challenge facing fire prevention and forest protection efforts.
