Tragic case of 3-year-old in Crete: Abuse and critical condition leave boy brain dead

The condition of the three-year-old boy from Crete, who was subjected to severe abuse by his 26-year-old mother and her 44-year-old partner, appears irreversible. According to reports cited by Cretalive, the boy has been declared brain dead.

The child suffered severe head injuries, multiple bruises, and abrasions. He has already undergone surgery for some of his injuries and remains hospitalised in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at PAGNI Hospital in critical condition.

Severe injuries and critical condition

Speaking about the boy’s condition, PAGNI hospital director Giorgos Chalkiadakis said the child arrived in extremely poor clinical condition. “After the necessary examinations, a large subdural haematoma was discovered. He was urgently taken into surgery to drain the haematoma and is now in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. His condition remains extremely critical,” Chalkiadakis stated. He further explained that a forensic examination has already been conducted, and the findings are awaited. “Every passing minute is critical,” he added.

The boy was transported to the hospital by an ambulance following a call from neighbours who were concerned about the child’s condition. Upon arrival, the child presented with not only the haematoma but also extensive bruising and abrasions across his body.

Distressing evidence and allegations

Video footage discovered on the 44-year-old man’s phone revealed the physical abuse the boy endured, including burns from cigarettes and bruising on his head and legs. The footage, which left even police officers shaken, provides stark evidence of the torment inflicted by the boy’s mother and her partner.

The 26-year-old mother and her partner were brought to court on Monday morning. While the man claimed the boy fell and hit his head, the mother alleged she was not at home and returned to find her son unconscious. The couple, granted time to prepare their defence until Wednesday, faces charges of attempted murder committed jointly in a calm mental state, causing grievous bodily harm in concert and repeatedly, unlawful use of weapons in concert, and drug possession for personal use.

Drug use and investigation

According to police spokesperson Konstantina Dimoglidou, a forensic examination was ordered to determine the duration of the abuse. “The child has injuries that are not from the same day and has been subjected to extensive abuse. The two suspects are blaming each other, and one of them is reportedly a drug user,” Dimoglidou said. A police investigation of the house where the abuse took place uncovered significant evidence, including photographs of the scene, which will be used in the case file.

The fight for life

Despite extraordinary efforts by medical staff, the boy’s condition remains dire. Beyond the severe head trauma and bruising, the boy developed diffuse intravascular coagulation, a rare and life-threatening condition in children, which has since been treated. However, doctors say the situation is nearly irreversible, with the boy declared brain dead.

This tragic case has shocked the local community and drawn widespread condemnation. Authorities continue to investigate, while the couple remains in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
