2nd phase of Apostle Andreas conservation works begins

Date:

The second phase of the conservation works of the Apostolos Andreas Monastery in Turkish-occupied Rizokarpaso begins, according to the Greek Cypriot head of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, Sotos Ktoris.

In a post on social media, Ktoris said that Phase II includes the restoration of the medieval chapel, which is located on the lowest level of the complex, as well as the holy water fountain.

It also includes the restoration of the historic wing dating back to 1919, repairs to the main complex and the church, as well as external works, he adds.

Ktoris notes that the conservation works are funded by the Church of Cyprus and Turkish Cypriot EVKAF and are being implemented under the supervision of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
