Luggage scan at departure gate

Three passengers departing Larnaca Airport on Monday faced arrest after Customs officers found a large haul of illegal cigarettes in their luggage.

Customs Department statement details how Larnaca Airport staff, acting on intelligence, inspected bags of three UK-bound travellers yesterday.

210 cartons of untaxed cigarettes

Each suitcase held 70 cartons of 200 cigarettes, 210 total, lacking mandatory Greek and Turkish health warnings, confirming they were untaxed.

This Larnaca airport tobacco smuggling attempt triggered immediate action.

Arrests, seizure, and fine settlement

The trio faced on-the-spot charges, with luggage and contents seized.

They secured release later via out-of-court settlement, paying €1,600 total (€4,200 each).
