A shocking incident has unfolded in occupied Karpasia, where several helpless donkeys were brutally slaughtered. Reports from Turkish Cypriot media indicate that unknown individuals shot the animals at close range, leading to a gruesome scene. Among the victims was a pregnant donkey that was in the process of giving birth.
Following the discovery of 14 wild donkeys found dead approximately 500 metres northwest of the Rizokarpaso landfill, the authorities in the occupied territories have launched an extensive investigation. The so-called police, in collaboration with the ‘veterinary services department’, are working to determine the exact causes of death.
The tragic event was first reported on social media by the ‘Natural Park’ in occupied Vouno. According to their post, researchers from the ‘Cyprus Institute of Wildlife Research’ discovered at least 14 wild donkeys that had been shot and savagely killed. Supporting photographs were also shared online.
Initial observations at the scene confirmed that the animals had been executed with gunfire from close range. The brutality of the killings has sparked widespread outrage, with many expressing their horror over the senseless act of violence.
In a written statement, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar said he is closely monitoring the case and has full confidence that the perpetrators will be swiftly identified and brought to justice. He expressed deep sorrow over the massacre, stating that the donkeys, which have become a symbol of Karpasia and the occupied territories, were shot with hunting rifles at close range.
“This atrocious incident has deeply shattered my heart, as well as that of every conscientious person,” Tatar remarked. He likened the violence against animals to other forms of societal violence, such as abuse against women and children, emphasising the need to speak out against all forms of cruelty. He added that the overwhelming response from the public in condemning the act had provided some solace amidst the tragedy.
Tatar further referenced a 2013 ‘law’ regarding animal welfare and the importance of ensuring that animals continue to exist in a safe and healthy environment. He stressed that adherence to such regulations should serve as a guiding principle in the protection of wildlife in the occupied areas.
This massacre has ignited significant concern about animal rights and wildlife protection in Cyprus, with many calling for stricter measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
