13-year-old arrested, drunk father arrives to pick her up

Date:

Youth delinquency is becoming a growing societal issue, said the Minister of Justice. Speaking on Monday, Marios Charsiotis addressed incidents involving young people last Friday.

“The concern lies in the social dimension of these phenomena. For example, a 13-year-old girl was taken to the station following serious disturbances, and her father arrived intoxicated to confront the police. This incident speaks volumes about the broader social context,” the Minister emphasised. He added that eradicating youth delinquency is extremely challenging. “What we must do, particularly parents, is play a crucial role in shaping the character of children,” he said.

“The State will focus all its efforts on addressing the problem. Our actions are ongoing, but we must intensify them,” he added.

When asked about the possibility of holding parents criminally responsible, he explained that a 2021 law includes provisions for civil compensation by parents for material damages caused by their children. “The issue of criminal liability is not simple, it is multidimensional and requires thorough study,” he said.
